The time is approaching when we will lie on our deathbeds. Oh long-expected day, come quickly! The best thing a Christian can do is die and be with Christ, for this is “far better” (Phil 1:23) than life in the flesh. When we lie on our deathbeds panting out our life, we shall remember the winter is forever past. No more of this world’s trials and troubles are ours, for “the rain is over and gone” (Song 2:11). No more stormy doubts, no more dark days of afflictions…
These words (Ps. 23:4) are sweet birds that sing in the groves by the side of the river Jordan. The voice of the turtledove is heard in the land (Song 2:12). Calm, peaceful, and quiet, the soul rests in the consciousness that there is now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus (Ro. 8:1). “The fig tree puts forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grapes give a good smell” (Song 2:13).
You who are believers in Christ, look forward to death with great joy. Expect it as your springtime of life, the time when your real summer will come and your winter will be over forever!
-Charles Spurgeon, Beside Still Waters
